Most factories have reached 100% of their production capacity as they face a seasonal surge of orders and backlogs. For houseware type products, current backlogs could last into May of this year.

China Supply Chain Recovery from the Coronavirus Disruption

First, the good news! As of March 12th, 2020, the coronavirus outbreak in China has been tapering off. Most provinces (which account for 1.3 billion people), except for Hubei, have had a single digit number of new infections for over 14 days. Depending on the recovery rules of local areas, factories are ramping up to work with intensive and complex monitoring measures in place. Shops are also opening up after being shut down for roughly a month and a half.

Factories in eastern China have for the most part reached full capacity. Southern China has recovered to about 70% of capacity. The “motto” for this recovery has been “ramp up hard and control the corona”. This means the worldwide shortage of supplies, such as face masks, should be over in days.

Manufacturing Overseas: China vs. Thailand

China has long held the role of the ideal manufacturing hub. It’s generally low cost labor, and fantastic infrastructure has made it the go to source for many companies. Despite its rising wages, in part due to a country wide shift to increase medium to high tech manufacturing, China still holds some major competitive advantages over its smaller fellow nations. However, with the increasing ambivalence caused by rising tariffs and the U.S.- China trade war, many are looking into alternative sourcing options.

Thailand is one of the more interesting countries in Southeast Asia that is trying to make its mark known as a major player in the world of manufacturing. It holds its own unique advantages and disadvantages, but how does it compare to those of China?

How many times have you seen a “Made in China” label on a product? Chances are your answer is “a lot”. This product information  isn’t just a courtesy to the customer. It’s legally required for products imported into and sold in the U.S. But what actually determines country of origin? What really makes something “made” in China, versus say, “assembled” in China?
