How to Ship Dangerous Goods

Shipping dangerous goods around the globe can be an arduous task. It is a complex and highly regulated process. There are many transport regulations that shippers must stay current with in order to have the proper knowledge to remain compliant, stay safe, and avoid penalties.

WHAT IS A DANGEROUS GOOD?

Dangerous goods (DG) are any substance or article than can harm a person, property, or environment during transport. Whether a product is considered a dangerous good depends on various factors such as flammability, concentration of the substance, or whether it is shipped via ocean or air. It is the shipper’s responsibility to determine if their goods meet the requirements to be classified as dangerous goods, depending on their mode of transport. It is important to remember to look for “hidden” dangerous goods—items that may just be a small part of a product. Any time you ship something that could be a DG (liquids, powders, creams, gels, batteries, etc.), it is important to still report it. Carriers and forwarders want proof this material was noted and is actually non DG, rather than not being noted at all.

10 Factors to Consider in a Cost Reduction Strategy

Design-to-cost (DTC) is one of the most common strategies for cost reduction during product development and manufacturing. Cost is an important parameter to consider in even the earliest designs of a product. It is easier to design costs “into” a product, rather than remove them later. By making the right decisions in a design or concept early on, extra unnecessary costs that may be incurred by a design change later on can be avoided.

The concept of DTC extends beyond just design, to product specifications and the complete development cycle. DTC addresses costs including those labeled as recurring production costs, non-recurring costs, product costs, and product price or acquisition costs. For example, any environmental factors, expected maintenance that will be needed, or any other part of the process will be taken into account. However, DTC does not necessarily mean a product will automatically reach a defined target cost. It simply is about considering cost as a design parameter during product development.
